Witness to Christ

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
Romans 10:14

The mission of the church is not to build a kingdom, but to witness to one. It’s not to raise the kingdom from the ground up, but to testify a better kingdom has come down from heaven. Being witnesses of Jesus means pointing people to him by sharing experiences, testimonies, truths, and ultimately through sharing the gospel.

We have good news to proclaim and a greater story than any other narrative in the world that people are longing to hear. Every Christian is called to evangelize (or witness) to Christ with our words. To do this we need to be equipped, relational, and courageous. We’re not giving good advice or laying out good plans, we’re sharing good news!

Focus Area: Evangelism

Sharing the good news of Jesus can feel both natural and daunting. The word “evangelism” has been clouded by perceptions, pressures, and political associations, often leaving people confused, hesitant, or guilt-ridden.

But evangelism is beautiful! God calls and equips his church to share the gospel—a mission of love, not fear or shame. It’s not our job to convert or argue, but to faithfully offer the water of life to a thirsty world, pointing to the gospel as the remedy for sin and sorrow.

Jesus was “mighty in deed and word” (Luke 24:19), and we should strive for the same. If we believe eternity is at stake, we cannot let discomfort hold us back. Romans 10:14 reminds us: “How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?” It’s time for the church—our church—to boldly and joyfully witness to Christ in both word and deed.

Ways This Plays Out at Reality LA

ASL at Reality LA

Our desire is to be a church that witnesses to Christ so that all can call upon his name and know his mercy and grace. We also seek to be a community that welcomes, includes, serves, and values every member of our community and city to the best of our ability. Only 2% of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community attend a church gathering or are involved in a local church. ASL at Reality LA is a direct, impactful way to witness to Christ and see our church and city further reflect the kingdom of God.

Evangelism-Specific Training

We are preparing a three-week training to help equip our church with the what, why, and how of witnessing to Christ through evangelism. It will be available soon, so stay tuned!
There are also other great resources to help equip and train the church:

  • The “Witness to Christ” dynamic of the discipleship pathway is a great first step to take alongside a small group of people.
  • Sermons like this one delve into how we reach the disinterested.
Neighborhood and Everyday Discipleship

All mission is meant to be lived out daily wherever God has called us! There are specific people or groups in our city to whom we have a consistent relational touchpoint, who are a consistent presence in our neighborhoods or daily lives, or to whom we feel deeply called to witness. Discipleship and evangelism are often best in the context of relationship, so we invest deeply in the places God has already placed us to truly know and be known by others, care for their souls, and share good news.

Other Reality LA Ministries

All ministry at Reality LA is centered around discipleship and equipping the church to be disciples who make disciples. Witnessing to Christ is taught, practiced, and lived out in many different contexts, including community groups (regular spaces to welcome in or go to people not following Jesus in Los Angeles), gospel care (a space in which we learn how to become intent listeners, ask good questions, press against idols and strongholds, and show how Jesus is greater), faith and work initiatives (including conversations about various ways we witness to Christ in the context where we spend most our time), and more.

Who We Partner With

We partner with individuals and organizations across the city, walking hand-in-hand to seek renewal by serving Los Angeles together. Each partnership works to disciple our church in a distinct aspect of evangelism and provide different opportunities to seek the lost in Los Angeles. Young Life (high school) and Cru (college) focus on students, Navigators focus on creatives and those in creative industries, and Mike and his wife are global partners operating a language school who focus on bringing the gospel to life in audiovisual format for people in their unique cultural context through art and animation.
