Faith and Work

Before sin entered into our world, God gave the first humans a job: be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; and cultivate the land (Genesis 1:28; 2:15). It was only after sin that work became toilsome. This means working is part of being human, but how we engage our work will always be broken.
While calling involves much more than our jobs, for most of us, work (paid or unpaid) is our single biggest time commitment every week, meaning it will be one of—if not the—primary context in which we follow Jesus, love one another, and serve Los Angeles. Work is the main way God cares for people and provides the world with its daily bread.
God’s command to cultivate the earth is often referred to as the “cultural mandate”—to take what God created and develop it for the good of the world around us. We believe our work isn’t just work, but a calling from God. It’s vital that we understand what Scripture says about work and how those truths shape the way we engage our work in Los Angeles.
Vocational Groups
Vocational groups are quarterly touchpoints for church members to connect with others in their field for the specific purpose of supporting one another and growing together in our work as followers of Jesus. These groups have rolling entry, so they’re a great way for people new to Reality LA to not only meet others in their own field but to get connected to the broader life of our church as well.

Theological Equipping
We host an annual six-week faith and work course designed and led by our partners at the Center for Faith and Work LA. The course explores God’s design for work and the beauty and brokenness we experience as we navigate our vocations.
Dates for our next course will be posted when available.
Ongoing Discipleship
Discipleship Basics is a tool we created to help people understand what a life renewed by Jesus looks like. Whether you’re new to following Jesus or have been following him for decades, we encourage you to go through this content with a small group of people. Two of the twelve dynamics explored in Discipleship Basics are “Work with God” and “Make Culture,” which offer a theological perspective on work and culture and questions and practices to help Christians understand how their faith in Jesus impacts their work and calling.
